Herman van Bergeijk

Herman van Bergeijk (b.1954) is an architectural historian who studied in the Netherlands (Groningen) and Italy (Venice). After working abroad and teaching at many universities in the United States, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands he obtained his Ph.D. in 1995 with a study into the work of the architect and town planner W.M. Dudok. In 1997 he was appointed at the University of Technology in Delft. In 2003 he taught a year at the Bauhausuniversität in Weimar. Since 2004 he is an Associate Professor in Architectural History in Delft. He has curated many exhibitions and published extensively on 17th and 20th Dutch and Italian architecture. Recent publications are: Het handschrift van de architect. Schetsen van Nicolaas Lansdorp en tijdgenoten (together with Michiel Riedijk)(2014), Aesthetic Economy. Objectivity in Dutch architecture (2014), and Jan Duiker, bouwkundig ingenieur (1890-1935). Van warm naar koud (2016). In the moment he is studying the more traditional architects in the 20th century, especially the work of A.J. Kropholler. He is president of the Dudok Foundation and an editor of the cultural magazine Eigenbouwer.

Meindert Booij

Meindert Booij (1951, Groningen NL) studied Architecture at the Technical Universiy Delft, where he did his Masters with prof. J.B.Bakema in 1976. Then he entered the office Van den Broek en Bakema, where he became co-owner and leading-architect from 1988 till 2014. Meindert is still linked to the office, nowadays named Broekbakema which is active in the field of Masterplans, Architecture and Interiors as well in new-build, re-use and restaurations of Schools, Universities, Offices, Laborities, Housing, Libraries, Hotels, Industrial Buildings etc.

Stefan de Koning

Architect and Senior Associate, MVRDV architects and urban planners, Rotterdam

Stefan de Koning heads MVRDV’s department for projects in India and Southeast Asia. He joined the firm in 2002 and has realised a variety of projects such as the Gyre commercial center in Tokyo and the ‘Future Towers’ large scale housing development in Poona, India, and is currently overseeing the construction of a mixed-use development in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Stefan graduated as an interior architect and designer from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam in 2001, after obtaining a degree in industrial and architectural design from the AIVE/Design Academy Eindhoven. Since 2014 he teaches at the studio for Complex Projects & Vertical Cities, MA Architecture course at the TU Delft.

Jaap Gräber

Architect, PLAN-Modules, Amsterdam

Gräber worked from 1994–2012 with Claus en Kaan Architects Amsterdam as architect, director and partner. Architectural projects include Stadsarchief Amsterdam (Amsterdam); A’DAM tower(Amsterdam); Mövenpick Hotel(Amsterdam), Stadsdeelkantoor Zuideramstel (Amsterdam), 500 Beethoven kantoren(Amsterdam), RWZI (Hilversum); Dreef Provinciehuis Noord Holland (Haarlem) ; housing Evry (Parijs); Tapei Twins (Taiwan); Stadsdeelwerf Zuideramstel (winner of the “ARCAM Ämsterdam Architecture Price 2009).
As an urban planner he made the design for Haveneiland West en Oost, IJburg (Amsterdam), Gerswin 1 Zuidas (Amsterdam) and Wibautas / Weesperplein (Amsterdam).

In 2013 he started PLAN-modules concentrating on strategic spacial advice, development vision and masterplanning. He is also involved in UPMM: Urban solutions and Planning and worked on Urban solutions and Planning for mass migration, mass shelter and sustainable development in the Zaatari refugee camp, Jordan and other regions.

Meltem Ö. Gürel

Associate Professor and the Founding Chair of the Department of Architecture at Bilkent University. She received her Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Prior to joining Bilkent University in 1994, Dr. Gurel practiced architecture in Illinois and New York. She was a visiting scholar at UIUC’s School of Architecture. At Bilkent, she also served as the Chair of the Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department. Her research interests include architectural theory and criticism, cross-cultural histories of modernism with an emphasis on social, gender and cultural studies as they have influenced the built environment – especially in Turkey – in the mid-twentieth century, space-culture relationship, and design education. Dr. Gürel received numerous research awards and grants and published articles in leading journals, including Journal of Architecture, Journal of Architectural Education, Gender, Place and Culture, Journal of Design History, and Journal of Architectural and Planning Research. Her work was also published in many edited books, such as Routledge Companion to Design Studies and Performance, Fashion and the Modern Interior: from the Victorians to Today. Recently, she published Mid-Century Modernism in Turkey: Architecture Across Cultures in the 1950s and 1960s (an edited book by Routledge, 2016).

Marinus Jongeneel

Marinus Jongeneel (1994, Amstelveen, The Netherlands) studied at TU Delft University (2012-2017). In 2016 he wrote his history thesis about the designs Willem Dudok made for the Izmir municipality, focussing on the project for the Theatre. He currently works in Mexico city as an architect.

David Mulder van der Vegt

XML is an Amsterdam based architecture office founded in 2008 by Max Cohen de Lara and David Mulder van der Vegt. The office is fuelled by a research-driven approach that turns a careful analysis of a project’s core challenges into the driving force of design. XML is internationally known for creating innovative designs that tailor buildings and cities to contemporary life such as the design for the United Nations office tower ‘United Natures’ and the Hong Kong art space ‘Art Square’.

Their efforts to date brought the office extensive recognition and prizes including two Europan awards for emerging European architects and a selection as finalist for the Prix de Rome, the oldest and largest Dutch state prize for Architects under 40. The work of XML has been exhibited internationally at the 14th International Architecture Biennial in Venice and the 5th Guangzhou Triennial.

Since 2010 spaces of political congregation have been part of the office’s ongoing preoccupation. In 2016 XML published the book ‘Parliament’ that compares the plenary halls of the parliaments of all 193 United Nations member states. Early 2016, XML in collaboration with Jurgen Bey realized a new interior for the European Council in Brussels, as part of the Dutch Presidency of the European Union. Between 2014 and 2016 XML directed the interdisciplinary research program Designing Democracy at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam.

Fatma Tanis

Fatma Tanis (b. 1990) graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul. After graduating she followed two master programmes simultaneously: Restoration and Evaluation of Historic Urban Sites at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and Architectural History at Istanbul Technical University, where she received Master’s degree with the thesis entitled "The Waterfront Regeneration Project and Contemporary Design Approaches of European Port Cities". She then lived in Hamburg as a research scholar at the Hafencity University, where she explored her interest on port cities further. Following this, she held a position as a research assistant at the Istanbul Technical University. Since 2016, she has been a PhD Researcher in the Chair of History of Architecture and Urban Planning at the Delft University of Technology under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ing. Carola Hein and Dr. Ir. Klaske Havik. Her PhD research deals with narratives and port city culture of her home city Izmir. Fatma Tanis is an active participant in international and national workshops and conferences, where she regularly presents her papers. She has recently lectured as a teaching assistant on the “Building Green” Course with Prof. Hein and “The Global Turn: Modern Architectures and Movements since 1851” with Prof. Dr. Ir. Tom Avermaete & Prof. Dr. Michelangelo Sabatino (IIT), in the Department of Architecture at TU Delft. She lectured to master students (Diploma Studio Methods & Analysis, TU Delft, about “The Port City Izmir As a Cross-Cultural Construct”, 5.10.17). As a practicing architect, she was involved in the Preservation of Bergama’s Heritage Site in co-operation with the Bergama Municipality and the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, responsible for two old houses’ conservation projects under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Oguz Ceylan.

İlhan Tekeli

City and Regional Planner, Social Scientist. (born: 1937 - İzmir)

Prof Dr. İlhan Tekeli was retired from Middle East Technical University, Department of City and Regional Planning. While he was an honor member of Turkish Academy of Sciences, he resigned from this membership because government is introduced a new delegated legislation. He is still the founding member of Turkish Academy of Sciences. He was one of the founder of History Foundation and he was the head of this foundation in the first years. From 2004 to 2008 Prof. Tekeli was board member of Council of Higher Education. He earned various social science rewards at different times. He is still working as a consultant in İzmir Metropolitan Municipality. His interest areas are, city and regional planning, economic policies, planning theory, local government theory, urbanization, Turkish economic history and European Union issues.

Marie-Thérèse van Thoor

Marie-Thérèse van Thoor (PhD) is architectural historian and associate professor in the chair of Heritage & Cultural Value at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft. She participated in the exhibition & catalogue Rietveld’s Universe (2010), and was one of the editors of Sanatorium Zonnestraal, the history and restoration of a modern monument (2010), and Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Restoration and Transformation of a National Monument (2013). Since 2015 she is member of the Committee for Architectural Review and Monuments Amsterdam. At the moment she works on the Getty-project Colour, Form and Space: Rietveld Schröder House challenging the future. She is editor in chief of the peer reviewed Journal Bulletin KNOB.

Sevil Sariyildiz

Sevil Sariyildiz is the Professor of Technical Design & Informatics at the Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architectural Engineering and Technology at Delft University of Technology -The Netherlands since 1993. She has been the dean of Faculty of Architecture at Yasar University between 2013-2017. Sariyildiz received Bsc degree in Architecture from YTU Istanbul-TR and Building Engineering Bsc and Msc degrees at TU Delft-NL (cum-laude) and PhD from TU Delft-NL (cum laude). During her Phd she worked at TU Darmstadt –Germany as well. She has been Department Head of Building Technology at the faculty of Architecture and acting Rector Magnificus for the conferral of doctorates at the TU Delft. She has been “distinguished guest professor” at Pennsylvania State University-USA and has been invited as Keynote Speaker in international conferences and participates as a member of many national and international councils, organizations and scientific committees and international projects. She has more than 250 scientific publications, promotor and comity member of more than 40 PhD students besides Msc students and other management activities. She has been advisor of the Dutch Ministry of Spatial Planning and Environment for 8 years and also advisor of the Ministry of Social Affairs in the Netherlands. She is the founder of DEWIS (Delft Women in Science) Network of the TUDELFT and initiator of the collaboration between Dutch and Turkish Universities TULIP. She has been chosen in 2015 as one of the “50 most influential Turks in the Netherlands” (Volkskrant), in 2009 as one of the “26 successful Turks in the Netherlands” (Elsevier magazine), in 2002 by the The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research chosen as one of the 20 “Colorful Talent in Science”, in 2003 as one of the “Top 10 women” in the Netherlands and in 2006 as one of the “Four successful foreigner in science in the Netherlands”. She has been practicing architect as well.

Peter Veenendaal

Peter Veenendaal (59) is a Dutch journalist and documentary maker with a passion for modern architecture. He was a reporter for several Dutch newspapers before he started a career in international broadcasting. He was the EU and NATO correspondent in Brussels for Radio Netherlands Worldwide. Later he became editor in chief of RNW’s Dutch language service. In recent years, Veenendaal has focused on video production and architecture, specifically the work of Dutch architect Dudok. In 2015 he produced the documentary ‘City of light, Dudok’s forgotten masterpiece’, a video reconstruction of the Bijenkorf department store in Rotterdam, destroyed by German bombs in 1940. Recently Veenendaal has published the website www.dudok.org, a catalog of all of Dudoks built designs.

Sebnem Yucel

Sebnem Yucel’s research questions the representation of places, buildings and histories, and concentrates on the modernization in non-western contexts. She received her B.Arch (1993) from Middle East Technical University, Turkey, MSc. Arch (1998) from University of Cincinnati, and Ph.D. (2003) from Arizona State University. Some of her publications include “Minority Heterotopias: The Cortijos of Izmir” (2016) in ARQ: Architectural Research Quarterly; “Regional/Modern and the Rest” (2015) in Architecture, Culture, Interpretation; and “Identity Calling: Turkish Architecture and the West” (2007) in Architecture, Ethics and the Personhood of Place. She is currently teaching at Yasar University, Turkey.

Volker Ziegler

Architect and town planner, born in 1965 in Lörrach (Germany), studied architecture and town planning at the University of Karlsruhe and Paris-Belleville School of Architecture from 1987 to 1995, worked in Paris as an architect and planner from 1995 to 2002, appointed associate professor of City planning & Design at Nancy School of Architecture in 2002, at Strasbourg School of Architecture since 2006, co-responsible for its Franco-German double masters programme with KIT (Karlsruhe), lives in Heidelberg (Germany).
